Southern Hotel

Southern Hotel, c. 1880, was a smaller, simpler yet popular hotel located on the corner of Ocean and South Pier Roads. Originally serving as a home owned by W.E.H. Whaley, who was one of the first to take in boarders in the Pier. Later he expanded his home and named it “The Whaley House.” In 1880 the home was purchased, enlarged, and renamed The Southern Hotel by H. W. Greene. Later this site is where Greene’s Inn was constructed (1888).
