The Wayside Inn was located on Mathewson Street, opposite the post office and the Casino, facing the ocean. It opened for business on April 10, 1928. The proprietor was Joseph B. Darid, a veteran of World War I. The Inn boasted of a bathroom for each bedroom, large living rooms, two spacious verandas, and a dining room that could accommodate 150 guests. The hotel was open year round. A newspaper article from 1928 indicates that the proprietor was going to have guests order their breakfast the night before, a custom common in the Mediterranean at the time, but not in the U.S.
